Flight cancelled? Skip the queue — rebook in minutes.

The airline app will quietly rebook you on tomorrow's flight. A live agent finds today's — on partner carriers, alternate airports, and unpublished inventory. Here's the 2026 playbook.

What every cancellation entitles you to

  • A cash refund of the unused ticket — automatic under the US DOT 2024 rule, within 7 business days for credit cards.
  • Or rebooking on the next available flight — same carrier, and in the US/EU you can insist on a partner carrier when it's the next available.
  • EU261 cash compensation of €250–€600 per passenger if the airline gave less than 14 days notice and the cause was in its control.
  • Meals, hotels, and ground transport on overnight cancellations when within the airline's control (per each US carrier's DOT-filed commitment).
  • All of the above regardless of fare class. Basic economy passengers get the same rights as first class when the airline cancels.

The first 5 minutes after cancellation

  1. Screenshot everything. The cancellation notification, the original booking, the departure board.
  2. Do NOT tap 'Accept' on the airline app's rebooking. That locks you into the airline's next-day suggestion and can waive your right to a partner-carrier reroute.
  3. Call us before you join the counter line. Our agents work partner-carrier and consolidator inventory in parallel while your line is still forming.
  4. If you're being asked to rebook on the app, the fastest exit is: request a cash refund of the unused ticket, then let our agent rebook you on the best same-day alternative — which may be a completely different itinerary.

Options a live agent finds that the app won't

  • Partner-carrier reroute. Same alliance, same day, often same class. The app rarely offers this on cancellations.
  • Alternate-airport rerouting. LGA→EWR, DCA→BWI, ORD→MDW — huge when the primary airport is weather-locked.
  • Split-ticket combinations. Two carriers, one itinerary, priced to beat the direct rebook.
  • Consolidator inventory on international routes. Net fares held by IATA/ARC agencies that never load into the airline's own reissue tool.
  • Downgrade or upgrade with fare credit. When the same-day economy is sold out, sometimes premium economy with the fare-difference credit beats the wait.

EU261 cancellation compensation (2026)

When the airline cancels within 14 days of departure and the cause is not extraordinary (weather, ATC, security):

Flight distanceCash compensation
Up to 1,500 km€250
1,500–3,500 km€400
3,500+ km€600

This is in addition to — not instead of — the refund or rerouting.

When to call vs. when the app is fine

Call us if any of these are true:

  • The next same-carrier flight the app offers is more than 4 hours later than your original.
  • Your itinerary is international, premium cabin, multi-city, or connects through a hub with limited daily service.
  • The cancellation is at an outstation with 1–2 daily flights on the route.
  • You're travelling with a group of 4+ or with an infant on a lap.
  • You need a hotel and don't want to argue for it at the counter.

The app is usually fine if: the cancellation happens 24+ hours before departure on a high-frequency domestic route (e.g. LAX–SFO, JFK–BOS) and the app's rebook is within 2 hours of your original time.

How CheapoTrav's rebook desk works

  1. You call. Live US-based agent in under 60 seconds.
  2. Read us your PNR (record locator on your original booking).
  3. We quote every same-day reroute: your carrier, partners, alternate airports, split-ticket combinations, and consolidator inventory.
  4. You pick, we ticket. Reissue on airline stock — same passenger name, same loyalty number.
  5. No booking fee. You pay fare difference (if any) at cost.

FAQ

What does an airline owe me if my flight is cancelled?

In every major jurisdiction: a full cash refund of the unused portion of the ticket, or rebooking on the next available flight (same carrier or, in the US and EU, a partner carrier) at no additional cost. In the EU, cancellation triggers EU261 cash compensation of €250–€600 unless the airline gave you 14+ days notice or the cause was extraordinary. In the US, the 2024 DOT rule requires automatic cash refunds within 7 business days for credit-card purchases when the flight is cancelled and you choose not to travel.

Can the airline force me onto a much later flight?

No. In the US, under each carrier's DOT-filed customer service commitment, you can decline the rebooking and receive a cash refund. In the EU under EU261 Article 8, you must be offered rerouting 'under comparable conditions' or a refund — the airline can't hand you a next-day flight and call it done if a partner carrier has seats today.

Can I get rebooked on a different airline?

Often yes, and this is where a phone call wins. In the US, most major carriers still honor 'other-airline' or interline rebooking on cancellations — but only if you ask, and typically only if agents can find the inventory. Consolidator and IATA-accredited agencies see partner-carrier availability the airline's own desk sometimes can't ticket. On international itineraries this is the single biggest reason to call rather than queue.

Is calling really faster than the airline app?

For cancellations, almost always. The app rebooks you on the airline's next available flight on the same route, which is often 12–24 hours out. A live agent can quote every same-day option — partner carriers, alternate airports, split tickets on two carriers, consolidator inventory — and ticket the winning combination in one call. Typical rebook time on our desk is 6–12 minutes.

Do I have to accept a travel voucher?

No. Under the US DOT 2024 rule, if your flight is cancelled you have an absolute right to a cash refund in the original form of payment for any unused portion of the ticket — no matter what the airline app offers. In the EU, EU261 Article 8 gives you the same choice. Take the voucher only if it's at least 25–30% larger than the cash value and you'll definitely use it before it expires.

What if I bought a non-refundable basic economy ticket?

It doesn't matter. Cancellation refund rights are triggered by the airline cancelling the flight, not by your fare class. Basic economy, saver, hidden-city — all refundable when the airline cancels. The fare-class restriction only applies to voluntary changes and cancellations by the passenger.
